Are Breast Implants Safe?

Despite recent news surrounding breast implants and associated risks, the FDA continues to assert that implants are safe and that it’s important for patients to be aware of potential complications. These may include scarring, pain, swelling and implant rupture.
What’s more, the FDA hasn’t issued any new implant restrictions or warnings.

Do Breast Implants Cause Cancer?

Earlier this year, the FDA assembled a panel of experts to discuss evidence surrounding breast implant safety and evidence suggesting a link between implants and a rare form of cancer known as Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL).
It is believed that implant associated ALCL attacks the immune system and forms in scar tissue surrounding the implant. A particular type of breast implant – one with a textured surface – has been linked to most cases of ALCL.
With that being said, the FDA cannot currently confirm that textured implants are the sole cause of ALCL.
It’s also worth noting that this rare form of cancer is slow growing and, in most cases, can be treated by removing the breast implants.

FDA’s Stance on Implant Safety

The FDA hasn’t altered its stance on implant safety and states on its website that, “there is no “apparent association” between breast implants and chronic, debilitating diseases, such as connective tissue disease.”
Nevertheless, it’s conducting additional research in order to determine if certain implant materials can lead to health problems.
