Breast Reconstruction with an XBOX Kinect.
Selfie before undergoing Breast Surgery? Technology is advancing all around us. When it comes to staying on the cutting edge of medical innovation, doctors and universities look for opportunities to build excellence for patients and improve results.
A recent medical study was conducted to do just that; improve precision during medically vital breast reconstruction. By using imaging technology from an Xbox Kinect gaming system, doctors are studying to see if precision can be achieved through 3D imaging. “The system’s depth camera allows for much more accurate 3D imaging of the breast, helping surgeons choose the right implant and potentially leading to faster, more effective treatment for patients.” (Sheffield Hallam University Centre, 2015)
The full study is given to doctors and universities for further discussion. Yet many engineering advancements in the technology department of companies allows for further exploration in the medical field. What helps doctors gain an edge with 3D imaging is ultimately the ability to measure both volume and placement on a chest cavity that suits the unique structural elements of a patient. This could lead to more advancement both in reconstructive surgery, combined mastectomy and Breast Augmentation procedures, and cosmetic needs due to birth defects or even preference.
